1Why modern motherboards still have PS2 ports?
And, of course, PS/2 ports are still popular in some gaming circles.
The fact that even the new LGA1700 based motherboards for the 12th generation Intel CPUs released in 2022 is puzzling. After all, if CD-ROMs and Floppy Drives will become obsolete, why can’t the PS2 ports be used?
Let’s explore all the reasons in detail.
What are PS/2 Ports?
The PS/2 ports are a small circular-shaped 6-pin ports that connect keyboard and mouse to your PC. The IBM Personal System/2 series of PCs gives the PS/2 port its name.
If a motherboard has PS/2 ports, it will often have two of them color coded, one green PS/2 port for the mouse, and one purple PS/2 port for their keyboard.
Any motherboard may also have a special PS/2 dual port that can be used for either the PS/2 mouse or PS/2 keyboard separately or both together using a special Y splitter.

3Are PS2 ports better than USB?
Right now, only PS/2 keyboards will have full rollover; however, Microsoft and Ducky are only two companies that have considered designing NKRO over USB; others, on the other hand, have already considered designing NKRO over USB.
xKRO, or Any Number, is the key roll over of your board; it stands for the maximum number of keys you can press without encountering any key blocking.
Many USB mechanical Keyboards are labeled as 6KRO, implying that any 6 keys can be pressed at once without the user experiencing blocking. This is generally enough for most users. However, a limited number of games may have a problem with 6KRO. With those 6 standard keys, USB keyboards with 6KRO also allow for a maximum of four modifier keys to be used.

13Do USB keyboards use interrupts?
However, please note that an Interrupt (PIC, MSI, or other) keyboard is not enabled for USB keyboards unless the USB driver specifies an interruption occurs at the end of frame. This interruption is not caused by the main press (or release), but it is triggered because of the USB’s end of frame.
Due to a single key press and release, a lot takes place. I would research what kind of keyboard you want to program for, what type of interrupt controller, CPU, etc., and go from there.
I wrote a series of books on this topic, in which I discuss what happens with both an ISA style keyboard and a USB style keyboard.

Note: New computers today use USB for the keyboard and mouse.
